About Safe Work Australia

Safe Work Australia was established by the Safe Work Australia Act 2008 with primary responsibility to lead the development of policy to improve work health and safety and workers’ compensation arrangements across Australia. It performs its functions in accordance with strategic and operational plans agreed annually by the Select Council on Workplace Relations.

Safe Work Australia began operating as an independent Australian Government statutory agency on 1 November 2009. It is jointly funded by the Commonwealth, state and territory governments through an Intergovernmental Agreement.

As a national policy body Safe Work Australia does not regulate work health and safety laws. The Commonwealth.

About Australian Building Codes Board

The Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) is a Council of Australian Government (COAG) standards writing body that is responsible for the National Construction Code (NCC) which comprises the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and the Plumbing Code of Australia (PCA). It is a joint initiative of all three levels of government in Australia and was established by an Intergovernment agreement (IGA) signed by the Commonwealth, States and Territories on 1 March 1994. A new IGA was signed by Ministers, with effect from 30 April 2012.

Our mission is to address issues of safety and health, amenity and sustainability in the design, construction and performance of buildings. It is also a regulatory reform vehicle for COAG.

About WorkSafe Victoria

Broadly, the responsibilities of WorkSafe Victoria are to:

•             Help avoid workplace injuries occurring

•             Enforce Victoria’s occupational health and safety laws

•             Provide reasonably priced workplace injury insurance for employers

•             Help injured workers back into the workforce

•             Manage the workers’ compensation scheme by ensuring the prompt delivery of appropriate services and adopting prudent financial practices.


About NSW WorkCover

WorkCover NSW is part of the Safety, Return to Work and Support Division (SRWSD) which was formed under the Safety, Return to Work and Support Board Act 2012 on 1 August 2012.

The Safety, Return to Work and Support Board (the Board) was also established on 1 August 2012, replacing four of the five boards in the former Compensation Authorities Staff Division with a single governing board. The Board has responsibility for determining general policies and strategic direction for the following agencies:

•             WorkCover Authority of NSW

•             Motor Accidents Authority of NSW

•             Lifetime Care and Support Authority of NSW.

The Board is also responsible for determining the investment policies of a number of funds, which include those of the Workers’ Compensation (Dust Diseases) Fund. Apart from investment and staffing responsibilities, the Workers’ Compensation (Dust Diseases) Board is governed by their own Board.

All SRWSD agencies report to the Minister for Finance and Services


About Workplace Health and Safety Queensland

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) is responsible for improving workplace health and safety in Queensland and helping reduce the risk of workers being killed or injured on the job. WHSQ enforces work health and safety laws, investigates workplace fatalities, serious injuries, prosecutes breaches of legislation, and educates employees and employers on their legal obligations. WHSQ also provides policy advice on workers’ compensation matters.

Work Health and Safety Board

The Workplace Health and Safety Board is the principal source of advice to the Queensland Government and Minister for Industrial Relations on workplace health and safety matters in Queensland.

Industry Sector Standing Committees

Industry sector standing committees primary function is to give advice and make recommendations to the Work Health and Safety Board on industry-specific workplace health and safety issues.


 About SafeWork South Australia

As South Australia’s work health and safety agency, SafeWork SA regulates, promotes and encourages safe, fair, productive working lives.

A business unit of the Department of the Premier and Cabinet, SafeWork SA administers state industrial relations legislation and manages the state’s work health and safety functions.

About WorkCover Western Australia

WorkCover WA is the government agency responsible for overseeing the workers’ compensation and injury management system in Western Australia. This includes monitoring compliance with the Workers’ Compensation and Injury Management Act 1981, informing and educating workers, employers and others about workers’ compensation and injury management, and providing an independent dispute resolution system.


About Northern Territory WorkSafe

NT WorkSafe is the administrative and regulatory arm of the Northern Territory Work Health Authority, the statutory body continued under Part 2 of the Work Health Administration Act 2011.

NT WorkSafe is responsible for the Territory-wide regulation of workplace health and safety, dangerous goods, electrical safety, and rehabilitation and workers’ compensation.


About Fair Work Australia

The Fair Work system is Australia’s national workplace relations system. It aims to promote harmonious, fair and productive workplaces for employers and employees.

The Fair Work system is overseen by:

•             The Fair Work Commission (the Commission): the national workplace relations tribunal

•             The Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO): an independent statutory agency created by the Fair Work Act 2009
