Preparing for the New ISO 45001 Safety Standards

The new ISO 45001 draft standards have now been released for public comment and viewing. The aim of these international standards is to set forth the requirements and best practise management for workplace hazards and safety.

Australia has a good history of workplace safety management, but there are continual opportunities – not to mention legislation and regulation – being adopted throughout the employment sector to assist business to increase it workplace safety practices.

These International Standards, now in their draft form (DIS) represent another step in this direction.

Here is what you need to know about those standards as they become available to the public for the first time, and how you can prepare your business for their eventual implementation. The new ISO 45001 safety standards have been released. The main purpose of these standards is to set best management practices for a workplace.

They aim to bring more structure in health and safety management.  These standards help to control the risks to health and safety, reduce the probability of risks and improve the overall performance of the people.

The standards are relevant to those handling dangerous goods, flammable products and storage, as well as safe use of motorised equipment such as pallet trucks, lift tables and platform ladders.

Its components can be integrated with other standards such as ISO 9001 & ISO 14001. The new standard of ISO 45001 has brought few changes with it. Because of this standard, there will be greater flexibility in the design and structure of Occupational Health & Safety management system.

Organisations will be more context focused. Internal and external issues of the company will be more deeply emphasised. Integration in the management of a business and occupational health and safety will be emphasised. Organisations will be more proactive and risk management will be taken seriously.

Legal requirements will be more explicitly stated. Hierarchy of control will be emphasized. Change management will be more focused and emphasized.

Also, outsourcing services will be more explicitly stated. In short we can say that this new standard, ISO 45001, will bring improvement is the organisations. It will be beneficial not only for the individuals but for the organisations as well.

1. Why the Need for Better Standards

According to recent surveys, almost 6300 people die every day in the Australian workplace due to bad working conditions or work related issues.

The loss of workforce like this damages the reputation as well as the performance of the organisation. In order to overcome this issue, a better ISO standard was needed. That is why ISO 45001 has been introduced. It will bring different changes in the Occupational Health and Safety Management system.

Eventually, the number of injuries and deaths will reduce in the organisations and firms will be able to sustain their employees for a longer period of time.

2. What Are the Standards and how will They Work

The main aim of ISO 45001 is to improve the standards of Occupational Health and safety within the organisations. The new component is that organisations will now be more context focused. Also, health and safety manager will not be solely responsible for the safety of company’s employees.

It will be the responsibility of entire top management. ISO 45001 will follow the same common terminology and structure of Annex SL.

3. How Business can benefit from the Standards

ISO 45001 is better than the previous standards. It is meant to bring better standards of safety within the organisation. In other words, we can say that there will be less probability of employee loss. It will also improve the engagement and commitment of employees with the organisation.

People will feel safe and secure once the organization will provide them with the better work environment. It will also reduce the cost of the company.

When employees get injured or expired then the company has to replace them. Hence, they bear the cost of replacement. So with these new standards, this cost will also reduce.
