Two hospitals and a freight services company won the 2014 Work Safety Awards in Western Australia for their efforts in minimising occupational health and safety (OSH) concerns.
WorkSafe WA Commissioner Lex McCulloch explained that the awards were about recognising outstanding solutions to common health and safety problems experienced by Australian workers every day. Workplaces, individuals, solutions and organisations are all nominated for entry in the awards.
“Awards such as these are all about encouraging best practice in safety and health, and the winners are leading the way by making a significant contribution to making WA workplaces safer,” he said in an October 31 release.
St John of God Subiaco Hospital received the the award for best individual contribution to workplace safety and health with no formal OSH concerns. Dealing with the problem of moving heavy IV poles and pumps attached to beds in cramped spaces, the hospital used a rail system that reduced the risk of poles falling on staff.
While such a solution may not be available in every workspace, any hospital can use stainless steel trolleys in order to move equipment around safely.
Other winners received awards for the operations and structures they put in place to manage health and safety on the work site. Peter Minchin of Pentagon Freight Services, for example, received the award for best individual contribution to workplace safety and health with formal OSH responsibilities. He had put in place a meeting and consultation plan to create a culture around safety.
Meanwhile, St John of God Murdoch Hospital won an award for its use of consultation and communication to improve benchmarks and audits of workplace safety.
Proper communication is one key to ensuring health and safety, but having the proper equipment is also crucial. Whether equipment for handling material or products for waste management, using the right equipment ensures safety plans are successful.
