Airports are some of the busiest places in the world – welcoming millions of travellers every year. Many of these passengers share one thing in common: they’re carrying luggage.

Luggage carts are a convenient way to transport heavy bags; whether it’s around the terminals or out into the carpark.

Our customer, Smarte Carte, is one of the world’s leading suppliers of luggage cart management solutions with over 65,000 carts in operation worldwide.

While they had a working system in place across Australia and New Zealand, they saw room for improvement.

Sitecraft were engaged to supply equipment which would help lower costs and increase efficiency of their luggage cart collection services.

Improving tow capacity and workplace efficiency

After reviewing the customer brief, our solution was to supply a fleet comprising 2 separate tow tugs which would effectively cover all their needs.

A key requirement for this customer was a solution which could safely tow luggage carts up and down ramps. In particular, this was key for collecting trolleys from carparks which can be 5-6 storeys high.

Featuring electromagnetic brake systems, both of our tow tugs are up for the challenge.

“Electromagnetic brakes mean you don’t need a handbrake. As soon as you take your foot off the pedal, the unit automatically breaks. That means you can get off the vehicle on a hill and it won’t go anywhere,” says Seth Mander, Category Lead for Tugs & Powered Vehicles.

With an increased towing capacity and improved ramp safety, the customer can now transport up to 50 luggage trolleys at one time.

Our solution has not only helped increase carrying capacity, it’s also made a difference to workplace efficiency. Partnering with Sitecraft has meant swapping from multiple vendors to a single unified system for all staff.

As Seth explains, “Whenever a staff member comes in they know exactly what equipment they’ll be using and how to use it. This helps prevent crashes and minimises damage to the product. It also increases speed and productivity because the person using it knows exactly how to operate the machinery.”

Functional equipment, built to last

Sitecraft are an authorised distributor for many global brands – helping to connect Australian businesses with world-leading material handling equipment.

For example, the base models of these tow tugs were made in the Netherlands and Canada and come with a 2- or 5-year warranty for peace of mind.

Alongside our wide range of standard tow tugs and powered equipment, we also offer customisation to match each customer’s unique business environment.

For Smarte Carte, it was a case of upgrading the ride-on tractors to meet safety regulations and ensure they were built to last.

“We worked with the customer to come up with the right safety features which allowed us to register them on the roads. It’s also a rain, hail or shine job – so we added features for all-weather conditions,” explains Seth.

The tractors were also fitted with lithium batteries which are compatible with opportunity charging. This means the equipment can be powered up in short bursts between uses without degrading long-term battery performance.

Nationwide rollout and ongoing support

It’s still early days for this project, but we’ve been proud to hear our customer is seeing great results.

As Seth explains, “Melbourne was a large project and they’ve just put 13 machines in there. There are plans to roll out across Sydney, Adelaide, Auckland and other locations as well.”

With nationwide after-sales support, we’re on call to ensure the longevity of the equipment which helps our customer manage costs over time.

Plus, we help minimise downtime by offering under 2-hour rapid response repairs for urgent issues.
